icolin’s
paintings are primarily oil on canvas. She uses the
ancient technique of canvas preparation either in
dark or light colour. She likes to prepare all
canvases herself to give the surface the right
feel.
Ideas and
impressions are constantly collected, transformed
and saved in sketch books. The colour of a
beautiful sunlit golden façade seen in Italy can
find its way to illuminate the eyes of a friendly
frog or grass in sunset.
Visual
influences stays with her and she might transform
it to express fear, harmony or humour. The
creativity of the artist sees no boundaries and all
parts of her life equally influence her
work.
The artist
is also a keen user of pencil and charcoal. As this
technique is very detailed and time consuming, she
has mainly used it for preparatory sketches. On
occasion however, she will produce full fledged
drawings, intended to be just that. These drawings
are quite different from her paintings but are
still sensational in their own way.
In order to
fulfill different creative needs, the artist has,
for example, made a series of marine life 3
dimensional pieces. Nicolin learned to work with
wood and developed a collection of furniture
transforming her creatures from canvas to actual
functional furniture, such as chairs, tables and
valets, all in the shapes of fish, crabs, etc. This
time consuming project was very positively greeted
by the public.
Many
translucent layers of color are superimposed, one
on top of another, creating a vibrancy that can
even be felt in her numerous limited editions and
decorative items. A typical Nicolin painting can
take several months to finish because of the long
drying period and the maturing of each artwork. Her
studio is filled with paintings in different stages
of development. Each painting is preceded by
numerous sketches where she tries out different
ideas and angles of expression.
Nicolin’s
incurable optimism has become a way of life that
shines through each and every piece of art work she
creates. This combined with her unusual path in
life has created a unique setting for her universe
which forms the basis of all her work.
